This Is Awkward

Review of This Is Awkward by Sammy Rhodes

240_360_book-1833-coverBefore I began reading This Is Awkward, I had no idea who Sammy Rhodes was, so when the intro of the book suggests looking him up online, my curiosity got the best of me. I thought I might ruin my unbiased perspective of the author, but turns out it was only the beginning of getting to know what to some is a “better kept quiet” part of someone’s story. I, however, was drawn in to the vulnerability and openness Sammy Rhodes displays in his writing.

In This Is Awkward, Sammy Rhodes touches on many areas: parenting, comparison, pornography, marriage, abuse, and depression. As he begins the conversation, the awkwardness quickly fades, because it’s only awkward as long as we keep it held in and uncomfortable. Once we open up about these issues, we can actually begin connecting with one another and find healing in our relationships. God’s grace certainly does meet us in the midst of our “awkward” and “crazy”.

I found this read funny and lighthearted but then also deep and serious at times. It actually reminded me of the way my husband preaches and teaches. He jabs with a few jokes or funny stories and gets you laughing so your guard is down, then follows up with a right hook of a serious topic or personal experience that stops you in your tracks and draws you in to listen intently. Here, as these awkward and intimate moments are shared, are where grace overflows and we see redemption take place. It was confusing at times, because the tone flipped back and forth between the funny and serious, but I found it comfortable because it was very personal and transparent. Sammy wrote this book in such a way that he handed you his personal journal and invited you into what he is learning. It’s private, awkward, vulnerable, and yet helpful for growth in grace.

Don’t read this book if you can’t handle real life or think that life is meant to be perfect and we should all be keeping our junk together to look good on a shelf. However, if you are your own brand of crazy and screwed up and realize this, it’s a refreshing read that may just offer some insight into your own personal growth and relationships.
